September 23, 2019 Update

Earlier this year, Cyclone Fani, a category four tropical cyclone, swept across east India and impacted regions of Bangladesh. Our partners in Bangladesh have done their best, since the storm, to respond to the greatest needs in the affected communities where they serve.

We are pleased to report that 48 communities in 12 villages were served by our local relief efforts, helping approximately 4,800 people (1200 families). Our partners effectively provided relief and ministered to their communities in the most practical and meaningful ways, including the distribution of first aid supplies, food, raincoats, and flashlights.

Significant damage to a local dam has delayed the repair of homes. The ministry plans to begin repairing damaged homes once the dam is rebuilt. Despite this setback, our local partners on the ground are giving families hope. “We’re considering relief distribution soon again, and finding ways to rehabilitate 26 families (of Amtali Church) to a different place,” said Leor Sarkar, General Secretary of Bangladesh Baptist Church Fellowship.

During the relief efforts, our partner in Bangladesh has been sharing the good news with people in Hindu and Muslim communities. Over 400 people have heard the gospel of Jesus through relief efforts, and more than 100 of them are now believers. This incredible response to the gospel has led to two new church plants in these communities.

In recent months, the progress of the relief efforts was interrupted by flooding in South Asia, but this has not discouraged the local leaders who are determined to help those in need.

We want to thank you for your prayers and support for our partners and the people of Bangladesh. The relief work carried out is only made possible by your generosity towards the Cyclone Fani Emergency Appeal. Please continue to pray for the BBCF ministry and the work that will continue to provide relief aid to communities affected by natural disasters in the region.

Summary

On May 3rd, Cyclone Fani hit India’s coastline with winds gusting more than 190 km/h. The cyclone caused substantial destruction that uprooted trees, destroyed homes, and took several lives. Thankfully the region in India where our partners work were not adversely hit; however, our partners in Bangladesh were significantly affected by the storm.

Fani’s Impact

In the wake of the storm, entire communities in Bangladesh are simply trying to survive. Those who work in agriculture are left without jobs, and their families still currently have hardly enough to live. Many houses are waterlogged and need substantial repair for the damage as a result of the storm. Also, many areas are below sea level, which has impacted the community’s supply of clean water, now tainted by salt water.

With your support we can provide relief aid to our partners on the ground in Bangladesh to respond to the needs of the communities that have been impacted by Cyclone Fani.

Please donate to the Cyclone Fani Appeal to aid those affected in Bangladesh:

1) Food for FamiliesYour one-time gift of $25 will support a family affected by the storm with a relief package of food to sustain them provisionally. Our goal is to provide for 200 families.

2) Housing Repair.Your gift of $125 will provide a family in Bangladesh with materials to repair and rebuild their homes. Our goal is to meet the needs of 40 families affected.

3) Water Tanks. Your gift toward water tanks will provide a district with 4 water tanks that will preserve a rainwater supply for surrounding communities. Each water tank will cost $2,380.

Thank you for praying. Cyclone Fani bypassed Kolkata, so we were saved. One of our missionaries in Sunderbans had his house damaged. We are trying to find out more details. Thank you once again for praying.

Greetings from BBCF.
Since you know that Cyclone Fani was hitting Bangladesh on May 4,2019. BBCF AAV and Baid had prepared for emergency response. There are almost 15 churches in the coastal zone at Bagerhat district and 10 churches in the nearby the biggest forest name Sundarban.
Our two churches name Kutakhali (previous AAV Center) and Milita Church is flooded because of high level water by broken the Dam/embankment due to cause of Cyclone Fani.
Church people are hand to mouth and most of them are shoe maker/repairer in the local market. Consequently, they are captivating in the house rather than earning money to buy food for family.
Please pray for our church people and the situation so that God will help them to overcome the situation.
Thank you so much for your cooperation and prayer support with team and partners.

May 3, 2019 Update

The news is reporting that Cyclone Fani is on its way to batter the regions of West Bengal India and Bangladesh. Partners International Canada has a number of international partners in this region, and we are mobilizing to support them through this storm.

Would you please join us in prayer as this storm is expected to hit the Indian coast on Friday morning, local time, and then make its way inland across all of Bangladesh and a good portion of Eastern India. In preparation, the Kolkata Airport will be shutting down on Friday and Saturday, over 200 train routes have been cancelled and the Indian armed forces are on high alert.  Already over 800,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas in India, and special train service has been enacted to ferry passengers away from the coast.

Please read a short update below from our 4 ministry partners:

We have four partners who are expecting to be directly impacted by this storm. We have reached out to each of them and are asking that you join us as we pray for them.

UPHOLD – led by Philip Timoti is closest to the projected landfall.

Greetings in the blessed name of our Lord. By the Grace of our Lord almighty we were spared but the storm went to Odissa and it hit badly PURI and Bhubaneswar with the wind speed of 175 km per hour. We have not heard any damage yet, but there could be great damage in that region. 80,000 people were evacuated from Sea shore areas. people who live in thatched shelters will see great blow on their houses.

Please continue to pray for Odissa and In Northern Andhra Pradesh we are safe. I am getting updates from our brethren from Odissa region and there could be great damage that will be notified tomorrow. I will update as I hear from our brothers and sisters from that region.

Jatiyo Kristiyo Prochar Samity– is our ministry based in Kolkata. Their community development services are spread across West Bengal and much of their work is located in the Sundarbrans coastal regions.

Thank you for thinking of us and praying for us. There is definitely going to be a lot of loss of property. Nothing can be done about that. Our prayer is that there are no lives lost.

It has started raining here. The cyclone is expected to pass through Kolkata this evening. We’re keeping in touch with all our field staff and are praying fervently for them.

Duars Rural Development Program – led by Joshua Narjinary, is our ministry based in West Bengal. While they are further inland, and the storm may lose some of its strength before it hits them, they have many small churches in lower lying areas and mountainous regions that are susceptible to flooding or landslides.

Bangladesh Baptist Church Fellowship – led by Leor Sarkar is our ministry in Bangladesh. The cyclone is projected to impact the entire country. While the Indian government is mobilized and active, there is little in the news from Bangladesh. Even though the country does not have the resources India has to respond–BBCF is mobilizing all its staff and its people trained in disaster preparedness to help villages close to the coastal areas.

You know our Adopt a Village program is in the coastal area, so, our staff along with the church people are using hand mikes to aware people take shelter in safer places, inviting them to come even inside the church (most of the places the church building is much stronger than people’s house), particularly the children who come for pre-school, our staffs are prepared with Rain Coats and Torch lights (may hit in the midnight). We may need to do some relief works depending on the needs.

Please continue to pray for us.

We invite you to become part of this movement to expand the reach of world missions by partnering with us.
